With different manufacturing techniques, but always using alternative raw materials, eco-fuels such as advanced biofuels produced with organic waste or biomass and synthetic fuels made from CO2 and renewable hydrogen can be a key technological solution to decarbonize transport.

To reach our goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2050, 乐鱼体育 will significantly increase its production of advanced biofuels in the coming years. That's why we have announced the construction in Cartagena of the first plant in Spain to manufacture this type of eco-fuel, with a production of 250,000 tons per year from 2023. Together with modifications to existing units and new projects to reach a total production of 1.3 million tons made from renewable materials by 2025 and more than 2 million tons by 2030.

The energy company will also develop a project that is innovative on a global level to produce synthetic net-zero emissions fuels in the port of Bilbao, using renewable hydrogen and CO2 captured in the industrial processes of the nearby Petronor refinery.

«The chemical composition of eco-fuels allows them to be used in existing vehicles with combustion engines that make up the vast majority of the cars on our roads today. That will allow us to take advantage of existing refueling and distribution infrastructures,» explains Miguel Ángel García Carreño, Manager of Process Development at the 乐鱼体育 Technology Lab. «In addition, in sectors such as heavy road transport or aviation that are difficult to electrify, these eco-fuels are going to be essential as they are a real and viable solution for reducing emissions.»

First advanced biofuels plant in Spain

With different degrees of technological maturity, the energy industry uses a very wide variety of waste and recycled raw materials that can be transformed into advanced biofuels: from used cooking oil, fats, or the organic fraction of urban waste to biomass from agricultural or forestry residues.

At its new plant at the Cartagena refinery, 乐鱼体育 will apply the most advanced technological approach, using hydrogen and recycled raw materials to manufacture advanced biofuels, such as hydrobiodiesel (HVO), biojet, bionaphtha, and biopropane. The result will be biofuels that can be used without modifications in existing engines and that will save emissions of 900,000 tons of CO2 per year, an amount similar to the CO2 that a forest the size of 180,000 soccer fields would be able to absorb.

This plant is an example of the company's commitment to the circular economy, one of the pillars of its 2021鈥2025 Strategic Plan. It will involve an investment of 鈧188 million and approximately 1,000 professionals will work on its construction. This is an example that «the boost to the production of eco-fuels in Spain, apart from being an effective way to reduce emissions, also represents an opportunity for industrial development, generates economic activity, and favors the diversification of our country's energy mix,» continues García Carreño.


The best alternative in aviation

In Cartagena, biojet for aviation will also be produced, a biofuel that 乐鱼体育 has already begun to produce at its industrial complex in Puertollano where, in August last year, it produced the first 7,000 tons of kerosene with biojet for the Spanish market. This batch will provide a reduction in emissions equivalent to 40 flights between Madrid and Barcelona. Recently, at its industrial complex in Tarragona, it produced a second batch of 10,000 tons which will entail a reduction in emissions equivalent to 55 flights between the same two Spanish cities.

«The biojet range, whether produced from waste or obtained from biomass, is also a priority for us because other decarbonization options, such as electrification, are not yet viable for aviation,» García Carreño continues.

Synthetic fuels from captured CO2

At its future plant in Bilbao, one of the largest in the world in its field, the company will produce synthetic fuels that can be used in today's car, truck, or aircraft engines. It will use CO2 captured at the Petronor refinery and hydrogen produced with 100% renewable electricity as the only raw materials. The CO2 emitted by these fuels in their complete life-cycle is equivalent to that captured and used in their manufacture, resulting in a net balance of zero emissions.

With an initial production of 50 barrels a day, scalable depending on results, the plant will be a technological benchmark in Europe in the development of a type of fuel «that we believe will play a growing role in mobility.»

The project is also groundbreaking due to the use as a raw material of CO2 captured at the nearby Petronor industrial facilities, one of the few refineries on the continent that has the infrastructure for CO2 capture and use.

Biogas to make use of waste

In the field of gaseous eco-fuels, the port of Bilbao will also house a plant to generate biogas from urban waste which will be used to replace part of the traditional fuel consumption that feeds the Petronor refinery's production. With an initial capacity to process 10,000 tons of waste per year, it could reach 100,000 tons, the equivalent of all the waste of this type generated in the surrounding area.

The company also plans to partially replace natural gas with biogas produced from sewage sludge, slurry from livestock farms, or liquors from the paper industry in its industrial processes, as an additional tool to achieve the goal of becoming a net zero emissions company.

To close the circle of resource use, «biogas can also become a product that we offer to companies or households or serve as fuel for mobility,«concludes García Carreño.
